  • How to select your University in 6 Easy Steps
18 Jan

Now that you’re done or nearly done with most of your basic education, an important question looms ahead of you — What Next?
If you’ve just completed your under graduation, you’ve likely done it in a field of pure Science, Commerce, or Arts. Now there lie a plethora of options before you. Should you do your post-graduation or should you jump into a career? Should you study in India or go abroad? Which country should you study in? Which University should you pick? What is the best course for you?

Well, a good way to go about the selection process is as follows:

  1. You start with selecting a subject based on your skill set and interests. It is very important to take your time with this step because what you study at postgraduate level will eventually play a major role in determining what you do for a living later in life. Make sure you really go for a subject that you enjoy this time, without buckling into familial or societal pressures, because you will have to live with the consequences of whatever decision you make.

  1. Once you have truly decided on one or two subjects, the next step is to look for universities all over the world that teach this subject.

  1. Then, you must look at their ratings across different criteria such as faculty, student-to-staff ratio, academics, a mix of international crowd, and the likelihood of getting a good job, among other things. There are some legit websites that provide good reliability ratings for international universities.
This is the step where you narrow down to 10–15 universities you really like. Now, you need to check their eligibility requirements for admission to the course of your choice.

  1. When you have found a few universities who offer your subject, whose course curriculum you like, and where you are eligible to get admission, take a look at the cities and countries they are located in. Find out a little bit about the locality, ease of access to resources, cost of tuition at the college, cost of accommodation, average monthly living expenses, and transportation.

  1. Before forging ahead with applications, ensure how you will manage the funds for the entire duration of the course. Do not underestimate your expenses. If the University page says you will require a certain amount of money per month, you most likely will need that much money.

  1. Finally, send in your applications to the universities you have shortlisted, and wait for them to revert. If you get selected by more than one University, the ball is in your court and you can take your decision based on which University best suits your requirements.

Making such important decisions is, of course, easier said than done. Even the best of us need a helping hand in selecting our University, country, and course. A good place to get help is a foreign education consultancy. Every city has plenty of such counselors, but make sure you put your faith in the right people to help you achieve your goals.
