17th October 2025
The UK has recently announced significant changes to its Student and Graduate immigration routes, reshaping how international students will apply for visas, meet English language requirements, and plan their post-study stay.
These updates, published through the UK Government’s Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules (October 2025), impact both new applicants and existing students who are preparing for their next steps.
If you’re planning to study or work in the UK, understanding these changes is essential to ensure a smooth application process.
The Graduate Route, launched in 2021, has been popular among international students for post-study work. However, starting January 2027, the UK Government will implement major reforms:
|
Degree Level |
Current Graduate Route Duration |
New Duration (From Jan 2027) |
|
Bachelor’s & Master’s |
2 years |
18 months |
|
PhD |
3 years |
3 years (unchanged) |
● Students completing their studies after Jan 2027 will get 18 months of post study work.
● Students completing their studies before January 2027 and applying for a PSW will get 24 month post study work.
One of the key updates for student visa applicants is the increase in maintenance fund requirements. From 11 November 2025, students must show higher levels of financial support to demonstrate their ability to sustain themselves while studying.

Applicant Type |
Current Requirement (Up to 9 Months) |
New Requirement (From 11 Nov 2025) (Up to 9 Months) |

What this means for students:
● You must have proof of funds for 9 months of study (unless exempt).
● Funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days.
● Universities may update their CAS issuance timelines to reflect these new rules.
Another key change is the tougher English language proficiency standards for visa applicants. This applies to Student Visa as well as Skilled Worker Visa routes.
● From early 2026, applicants will need to meet higher CEFR levels than currently required.
● The UK Government is aligning language requirements more closely with academic and workplace expectations.
● While full details will be rolled out in phases, students should expect increased IELTS/PTE scores for both academic and post-study work routes.
● Institutions must update their CAS and sponsorship obligations.
● Students should expect stricter monitoring of attendance and academic progress.
● Failure to meet compliance standards could affect visa renewals and extensions.

Students currently in the UK may not be affected by maintenance fund increases but should prepare for Graduate Route duration changes if they complete studies after January 2027.
No, the changes will be phased in from early 2026. Official updated score tables will be published on GOV.UK closer to the date.
The policy restricting dependents for most students (except postgraduates on research programs) remains unchanged.
Applications submitted before the rule change date will be assessed under current fund requirements.
