Canada Student Visa Requirements for Indian Students: Complete Checklist

Mr. Parthesh Thakkar

4th November 2026

Quick answer: Indian students applying for a Canada student visa need a DLI acceptance letter, valid passport, PAL/TAL in most cases, proof of funds for tuition and living costs, academic records, English-test scores where required, and a letter of explanation. Medical exams and police certificates may also be required.

Applying for a Canadian student visa from India can be a whole lot less stressful if you get your paperwork in order before you start filling out the online application. To be eligible for a study permit, typically what Indian students need is a letter of acceptance from a recognised learning institution, a proper passport with plenty of time to expire, proof of some financial ability to support themselves, and - depending on your situation - a provincial attestation letter, the results of a medical check-up, and a police character reference.

This checklist lays out the whole shebang of what's currently required for a Canada student visa from India, the key documents you'll need to gather, and the common mistakes that can cause your application to be delayed or weakened.

Thinking about studying in Canada yourself? Angel EduNext’s Canada student visa consultants can hook you up with some one-on-one advice on course selection, documentation, and study permit application so you're on the right track.

Canada Student Visa Eligibility for Indian Students

To apply for a Canadian study permit, you need to meet a few core conditions set by IRCC. You must be enrolled at a designated learning institution, prove you can handle your tuition and living costs, have a clean criminal record, be in good health (if a medical exam is needed), and convince the visa officer that you'll head back home once your permit expires.

It is also necessary to demonstrate your ability to support yourself and other family members joining you in Canada. Tuition costs, daily expenditures, and travel costs are all included.

IRCC requires a letter of acceptance, a letter to prove your identity, and proof of funds. The letter of explanation is advisable, but medical examinations, police clearance, and custodian letter come into play in specific situations.

1. Letter of acceptance from a DLI

Your first requirement is an acceptance letter from a Canadian designated learning institution. A DLI is a school approved by a province or territory to host international students.

For post-secondary applicants, IRCC asks the institution to validate the letter of acceptance. Upload the LOA only in the designated LOA section of the online application; placing other documents there can cause disclosure or processing issues.

Checklist:

  • Offer or acceptance letter from a DLI
  • Course name, program duration, start date, and tuition details
  • Conditional-offer documents, if applicable
  • Confirmation that your institution is a DLI
  • Confirmation that the program is PGWP-eligible, if post-study work rights matter to you

PGWP eligibility depends on the institution, program, and field of study where applicable, and when you submitted your study-permit application, so verify this before applying.

2. Provincial attestation letter or Quebec certificate

Most international students need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, commonly called a PAL or TAL. In many cases, you must accept your offer and pay part or all of your first-year tuition before your school issues it.

If you plan to study in Quebec, you need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate, known as a CAQ, instead of a PAL/TAL.

Checklist:

  • Accept your offer within the institution’s deadline
  • Pay the required tuition deposit, if needed
  • Request the PAL/TAL from your college or university
  • Check the PAL/TAL details carefully before uploading
  • Apply for a CAQ if studying in Quebec

3. Valid passport and photographs

Your passport must be valid for you and any family member travelling with you. IRCC requires a copy of the passport information page during the online application and the original passport after approval.

You also need two recent passport-size photographs, with your name and date of birth written on the back of each photo.

Checklist:

  • Passport valid well beyond your intended course duration
  • Clear scan of the passport bio page
  • Two recent photographs meeting Canadian visa specifications
  • Passports for accompanying spouse or children, if applicable

4. Proof of funds for Canada student visa

Funds proof is among the key documents you will need to submit in order to obtain a Canadian student visa. The IRCC expects the individual seeking the visa to provide evidence of his or her capability to fund the education, as well as cover his or her living expenses and transportation costs to return back home together with all dependents travelling along.

Acceptable documents proving proof of funds include bank statements, proof of loan for education, GIC, evidence of sponsorship or scholarship and even sponsorship letters. The amount needed depends on the tuition fee cost, destination, period of study and dependents.

Checklist:

  • Recent bank statements showing available balance
  • Education-loan sanction or approval letter
  • GIC certificate, if you choose this option
  • Scholarship or funding letter, if applicable
  • Sponsor’s income proof, ITR documents, and relationship evidence
  • Clear explanation of large deposits or unusual transactions
  • Funds covering first-year tuition, living costs, and travel

Study permit documentation by IRCC guidelines states that evidence of accumulated funds should be at least six months' old with explanation of the source of funds.

5. IELTS or other English test score

IRCC does not have a common IELTS score required for all applicants seeking study permits. It is mostly determined by your Canadian college or university.

But most Indian students prefer IELTS Academic since it is accepted by almost all universities in Canada. You should see if your DLI accepts IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or some other tests along with their minimum scores.

Checklist:

  • Valid IELTS Academic, PTE, TOEFL, or accepted equivalent
  • Score meeting your institution’s admission requirement
  • Test result matching the name on your passport
  • Official score report uploaded in the correct format

6. Statement of purpose or letter of explanation

IRCC recommends a letter of explanation explaining why you want to study in Canada and confirming that you understand your responsibilities as an international student.

Your letter should be honest, specific, and consistent with your academic history and chosen program.

Include:

  • Why you selected the course and institution
  • How the program connects to your past studies or career goals
  • Why Canada is suitable for your chosen field
  • How you will fund your education
  • Your intention to comply with study-permit conditions
  • A brief explanation of education gaps, backlogs, career changes, or refusals, if relevant

7. Academic documents

Your academic file should prove that you are genuinely prepared for the program.

Checklist:

  • 10th and 12th mark sheets
  • Bachelor’s degree and transcripts, if applicable
  • Master’s documents, if applicable
  • Provisional degree or convocation certificate, if final documents are pending
  • Backlog certificates or explanations, if applicable
  • Work-experience letters, if relevant
  • Portfolio for design, architecture, or creative programs

8. Medical examination

An immigration medical examination is necessary for those who wish to stay in Canada for a period of more than six months, have resided in some specific countries, and want to work in public health-related positions.

Indian students applying for extended courses must determine if a pre-paid medical examination is needed for their particular case and schedule the test with an IRCC approved panel doctor only.

Checklist:

  • Confirm whether a medical exam applies to you
  • Book with an IRCC-authorised panel physician
  • Carry passport and appointment confirmation
  • Upload the medical confirmation, if required

9. Police clearance certificate

IRCC may ask for a police certificate in some cases. Because obtaining one can take time, apply early if you believe it may be required.

Checklist:

  • Check whether IRCC requests a police certificate
  • Apply through the relevant Indian police authority or Passport Seva system
  • Keep the certificate valid and ready for upload
  • Do not delay your application if the document is requested

10. Biometrics and application fees

Most applicants should get their fingerprints & photo taken as biometrics, and they should do that right away as soon as they get the instruction letter, because sitting on that part of the application can just add extra time onto the end.

You will also need to pay for your study permit and the biometrics, and you can do that through the IRCC website. Keep an eye on the fees though, they do change, so double-check the IRCC payment page to make sure you know what you owe.

Canada Student Visa Processing Time for Indian Students

Things can change fast in terms of processing time, and in fact the latest numbers from IRCC are telling us that it can take anywhere from 5 to 7 weeks to process study-permit applications from India. Although if you go back a little ways, you will see that the timeframes have varied depending on how many people are applying at the time and how complicated each individual case is.

Don't go booking those flights or making non-refundable plans to travel just yet. You don't want to be wasting money if your study permit gets held up. Have a check on the official IRCC processing time tool just before you submit your application.

Common Mistakes Indian Students Should Avoid

  • Submitting bank statements without explaining large or recent deposits
  • Choosing a program unrelated to previous education or career goals
  • Uploading incomplete academic records
  • Ignoring the PAL/TAL requirement
  • Writing a generic statement of purpose
  • Applying with funds that cover tuition but not living and travel costs
  • Booking travel before approval
  • Using inconsistent information across the LOA, SOP, bank documents, and application forms

A strong application is not only about meeting the minimum requirements; it must clearly show genuine student intent, financial readiness, and a logical academic plan.

FAQs: Canada Student Visa Requirements for Indian Students

1. Is IELTS Essential for a Canada Student Visa?

IELTS isnt the only game in town when it comes to getting a study permit for Canada, but most institutions will want some proof of English language skills. Many Indian students use IELTS Academic, but some universities are open to other approved tests like PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT.

2. Is SDS still available for Indian students?

No. IRCC basically ended the Student Direct Stream programme in November 2024, so new Indian applicants will have to go through the regular study permit process.

3. What is a PAL for a Canada student visa?

A PAL - or Provincial Attestation Letter - is usually what you need to get a study permit. Most provinces will sort this out, but in Quebec, it’s more often a CAQ that you will need.

4. How much money do I need for a Canada student visa?

You will need to show that you have enough to cover tuition fees for the first year, plus a bit for living costs and to get back home when you have finished. The amount you need will depend on how much your tuition costs, where you plan to live, how long your program is and whether you will be bringing family along for the ride.

5. Can I apply for a Canada student visa without a GIC?

Yes. A GIC is one accepted form of financial proof, but it is not the only option. Bank statements, education loan approvals, scholarships, and sponsor documentation may also be used when they properly demonstrate available funds.

6. Do I need a medical test for a Canada student visa?

You may need a medical but only if your stay in Canada will be over six months, if you have not been living in some countries recently, or if you plan on working in a job that requires a medical test in the first place.
